Every class across four London locations. Filter by type, location, or level, then book the date that works for you.
Arriving on time
Please arrive 10 minutes early.
Each session opens with foundational techniques that everything else builds on. It's hard to catch up if you've missed that groundwork, and disruptive to others once the class is underway.
1
What to bring
An apron, old shoes, pen & paper, a towel.
An apron (synthetic is better than cotton, as it traps less clay dust). Shoes you don't mind getting earthy. A pen and paper for notes, as there's a lot to absorb in the early weeks. A small towel for drying your hands between steps. Clay, glazes, and equipment are all provided. If you booked with the starter toolkit, your tools will be waiting for you. If not, you'll need to bring your own.
2
Clay dust and your health
A genuine concern, not studio fussiness.
Long-term exposure to clay dust can cause silicosis, a serious lung condition. We ask everyone to wipe their work area with a damp sponge throughout the session and mop the floor around their space at the end. Clearing up is part of the session, not an afterthought.
3
Attending your sessions
Get the dates in your calendar before you book.
Please carefully check all the class dates on the course to make sure that you are able to attend all your lessons. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reschedule any missed lessons or join lessons on another course. Our classes run at full capacity and on different lesson schedules.
4
Firing and collecting
Work must enter the queue 3 weeks before your final session.
We fire your pots as they're ready, but the process takes time. Pieces made after the 3-week cutoff can be taken home as bisque (structurally hardened but unglazed). There's a small charge per piece: £2.50 per 500g of unfired clay, paid by card. Finished pieces are available roughly 2 weeks after your final session. We hold student pots for 1 month after the final lesson. Please make sure you collect them before then.
5
If this is your first time
Most people are a little nervous. That's normal.
You won't be the only one. Our instructors are used to working with complete beginners, and there's no performance involved. Just clay, time, and a room full of people in the same position as you. Long hair needs tying back, and long nails will make wheel-throwing noticeably harder.
6
We run pottery classes across London, from our studios in Hoxton, Leyton, and Highgate, and at Camden Art Centre. From one-off taster sessions to twelve-week courses. Classes are for complete beginners and returning students alike, with all materials, clay, and glazes included. Firing is charged separately at £2.50 per 500g. Prices start from £85.

##Have fun with clay!##
Turning Earth Highgate
UPSTAIRS CLASSROOM WITH ONLY STAIR ACCESS
Teacher: Hanna Salomonsson
An opportunity for school-aged children (11+) for a learning and fun activity with clay, where creative expression will be encouraged!
This six-week course will teach age-old methods of creating ceramic objects, like slabbing, pinching, coiling and slip-decoration. Participants will be supported to use these methods to carry out individual projects from start to finish, including glazing. They will also be able to have a go on the pottery wheel but this won't be the focus of the course.
The group will have a maximum of 8 participants so you can expect for them to receive plenty of support from our experienced teacher.
Please note - this workshop is for young adults aged 11+. You do not need to attend with them and all materials are provided. However, we advise that you provide your child with an apron to wear as clay can be messy.
Please also note the cost also covers the cost of the clay, the glaze, tools and firing the kiln.

##A unique experience with one of the Masters##
Turning Earth at Camden Art Centre
Teacher: Hanna Salomonsson
A bespoke tour of the Donald Locke Exhibition followed immediately by a two-day intensive ceramics workshop exploring sculptural approaches to clay inspired by the practice of Donald Locke. Participants will investigate clay not only as a functional or decorative medium, but as a carrier of cultural memory and layered personal history.
The workshop will emphasise experimentation, assemblage, surface treatment, and conceptual development.
Participants will be encouraged to move beyond traditional vessel-making towards
expressive, hybrid ceramic forms, with a particular focus on Locke’s biomorphic and mixed media sculptures.
ABOUT HANNA:
Hanna Salomonsson is a London based Swedish ceramic artist. Following a career in landscape architecture, she re-trained in ceramics in 2018. She also holds a BA in Art History, and this combined with her landscape grounding provides a unique vantage point for her ceramic practice. Hanna’s work draws upon the quiet lyricism of the Scandinavian landscape, as well as the rich, multi-layered history of her current UK surroundings. She is interested in how our sense of identity is anchored in our childhood landscapes, and her work aims to awaken memories, reconnect people with their surroundings and to inspire contemplation around the fragility of the natural world.
Hanna’s practice examines the boundary between sculptural and functional ceramics. Her work is produced using a range of techniques such as coiling, slab construction and various carving methods. Her process is based on relinquishing control, and she sees her pieces as an ongoing dialogue between herself, ceramic materials and the kiln. She uses a wide range of clay bodies and glazes to achieve complex shapes and surfaces, and she often continues to engage with her pieces post firing through the addition of contrasting materials such as gold leaf, epoxy resin and copper mesh.
Hanna joined Turning Earth in 2018, and is now based at In Production Studio in Leyton. Hanna teaches a range of courses and workshops at Camden Art Centre and Turning Earth Highgate. She exhibits regularly throughout the UK, and recent shows include Collect at Somerset House, Ceramic Art London and Craft in Evolution at Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery. .

Turning Earth Leyton
Learning Hub on Tuesday, Classroom in the main room on Thursday
Teacher: Simona Angeletti
We know that summer is a busy holiday time for many, but this shouldn't stop your creativity or hobbies! We have therefore thought of a new learning structure for you: THE SUMMER BUNDLE!
Just pre-buy one set (or two!) of 6 classes and come to learn and practise with a teacher whenever you prefer, on selected Tuesday and Thursday evenings over the summer (12 dates available). You can attend twice in a week, skip two weeks, attend every other Tuesday... just come when it works best for you.
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNUSED TICKETS WON'T BE REDEEMABLE AFTER THE FINAL CLASS ON THE 8th SEPTEMBER.
Each date can have a maximum of 12 students at a time, so please book your preferred dates with the pass in advance.
During the whole period, you will learn how to prepare your clay, learn handbuilding and throwing techniques and work on your projects.
You will have total freedom on which day to attend, however, there are some important deadlines to remember:
28th August: Cut-off point for the firing queue. This session will be the last available one to finalize all your greenware projects, so we can make sure your pieces are bisque-fired on time for the glazing sessions. Please remember to leave some time between your last making session and your final glazing session.
3rd and 8th September: these are the last sessions available for the bundle, so this is the last occasion to glaze your pots. If you have already glazed your pots, these sessions can be used to practise the techniques learnt during the previous months.
Thank you, and happy potting!

##Learn to make ceramics using a pottery wheel##
Turning Earth Hoxton (Laburnum Street)
Teacher: Ben Sutton
This class covers wheel-throwing techniques only and is suitable for people that have already completed at least one throwing-only course. You will need to know how to confidently center clay and pull a cylinder. This course IS NOT SUITABLE for complete beginners.
Please read more about the structure of this course here.
The course will cover topics such as throwing with larger amounts of clay, bottles and vases, lidded vessels, teapots, and repetition throwing. The exact content will be determined somewhat by the skill level and interests of the students.
Please ensure you are able to attend as many days of the scheduled course as possible before you sign up. It's particularly important that you attend the first two and the last one. The classes are usually full so we can't move people between them or issue refunds once the course has started.

##A unique experience with one of the Masters##
Turning Earth Hoxton
Teacher: Nancy Fuller
Nancy will demonstrate traditional hand-building techniques learned from different Asian masters. You'll be guided through creating strong, even walls to form a beautiful medium-sized vessel. Special attention will be given to timing and specific hand movements. Most importantly, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to continue working independently at your chosen scale.
This workshop is aimed at intermediate students.
ABOUT NANCY:
Nancy Fuller was born in a rural village in Taiwan and raised in the countryside in Scotland. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, with a degree in Fine Art Printmaking, and later earned an MA in the History of Art and Archaeology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. A Mandarin scholarship took her back to Taiwan, her birthplace, where she discovered the art of wood-firing. She then spent a year training with anagama master Suzuki Shigeji in Shigaraki, Japan, before designing and building her own wood-fired kiln in Aberdeenshire. Nancy’s wood-firing journey has since taken her across Europe, Australia, and the US, where she has participated in residencies and symposiums, continually refining her craft. Her story has been recently made into a film, by Guillermo Asensio.

In this 5-day course, students will learn everything you'd get in our 8-week throwing course - plus some extras - in two weekends. It's a great way to get going in the craft quickly without the commitment of a weekly time slot. This course is great for both beginners and students with some experience, and it covers wheel-throwing techniques only.
To make things even more interesting, we have added an extra Raku firing day on Sunday 13th September, 11-5pm. You will glaze these pieces with special glazes on the same day. You can expect to fire 3-4 pieces in the Raku kiln. The other pieces you made during the course will be fired in our regular electric kilns and you will be glazing them on Saturday 12th September, 2.30-5.30pm.
The rest of the pieces made during the course will be fired in our regular electric kilns. The standard glazing session will happen on Saturday, 6th September, 2.30-5.30pm.
Please ensure you are able to attend as many days of the scheduled course as possible before you sign up. The classes are usually full so we can't move people between them or add extra sessions or issue refunds once the course has started.
Thank you, and happy potting.

What’s included in the price?
▸
Clay, a selection of our studio glazes, and use of studio equipment are all included. Firing is the only thing charged separately, at £2.50 per 500g of unfired clay, paid by card at the studio. You only pay for the pieces you choose to keep, so you can practise as much as you like and only fire the work you want. Most courses have two booking options: one with an eight-piece starter toolkit to take home, and one without if you already have your own tools.
Do I need any experience?
▸
Not at all. Almost every course is designed for complete beginners, the one exception being our intermediate courses, which assume you can already throw. The first session starts with the basics, and the techniques build up gradually from there.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
▸
Once you've booked, the fee is non-refundable. If we can find someone to take your place before the course starts, we'll swap you over and refund you. We do our best, but we can't promise it will be possible. We can't offer additional lessons, reschedule lessons or refund missed lessons if you do not attend the dates which you have booked as part of your course. Our full cancellation policy has the details.
What should I bring?
▸
Bring a clean apron, since dirty ones spread clay dust, which isn't good for you or the people working near you. Wear clothes you don't mind getting clay on, and tie long hair back. You will need a set of pottery tools. You can buy them from us by adding a toolkit to your course when you book it. Otherwise you'll need to bring your own. Everything else is provided: clay, glazes, and use of the studio equipment.
Turning Earth is a social enterprise running pottery classes across London, from our studios in Hoxton, Leyton, and Highgate, and at Camden Art Centre. Our teachers are practising ceramic artists who make and sell their own work. Class sizes are capped at 12 students per teacher. After completing a qualifying course, students can apply for studio membership with independent access to wheels, kilns, and glazes.
We offer taster sessions, multi-week courses, and intensive workshops. All classes include materials, clay, glazes, and equipment. Firing is charged separately at £2.50 per 500g.

Our taster sessions are the easiest way to try pottery. No experience needed, just turn up and make something.
