COVID-19 update: Temporary suspension of Turning Earth courses

Following the recent change in the government’s position on social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend all our classes for the next six weeks, resuming week beginning 4th May or as soon as we can safely restart. While we remain open for members, our classes involve people working in close proximity and we want to enable our students to follow government advice with our support rather than miss out. It’s critical that everyone does what is necessary at this time to delay the spread of the virus so that the NHS can adequately prepare for the crisis.

While we know this temporary suspension of our schedule will cause disruption for all concerned, our hope is to be able to resume your courses where we left off when May begins. All weekly courses will be rescheduled six weeks later and then continue as normal. Intensive courses will be rescheduled altogether and we will offer students a range of dates for these. We will send you out confirmations of restart dates and intensive options as we gain more clarity on when normal life will begin to resume again.

Like the vast majority of small businesses impacted by the virus, our pandemic insurance does not cover the specific disruption we are experiencing, leaving us dependent on loans and the good will of our users to weather the financial burden of this extremely challenging time. We pray that you are able to be patient with us and wait for us to bring courses back on; this will go some way to helping us keep the jobs we provide for the wonderful ceramicists who teach you. In return we will do whatever we can to ensure that you are able to attend for the full remainder of your course.

We wish you and your relatives well and pray that these necessary measures succeed in protecting the maximum number of people.

Please note: Turning Earth Hoxton classes sell out extremely quickly (often within minutes), particularly those held in the evenings. Due to our high number of subscribers and the comparatively small size of our team, we don't have the resources to manage an advance waiting list. Instead, we now list the date and time that each course goes online as soon as we have scheduled it so that you can set a reminder to come back and book. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you into the studio soon.

About Turning Earth's ceramics classes

Our courses run all year round and each one is taught by an experienced Turning Earth artist. Each class has only 12 students to a teacher so you can expect plenty of individual attention.  Classes cover both hand-building techniques and wheel throwing and are available for anyone aged 16 or older. Tuition fees are  £300 for a 12-week standard class, and each session is  2.5 hours long. When your work is ready to be fired, there’ll be a small charge of £3.60 per kg for materials. Courses are non-refundable once in progress or when the course is sold out.

We also offer some 3-hour throwing class over 12 weeks. The fee for the throwing class is £360 for 12 weeks (3 hours each class).

Read more about our classes here.

You can also sign up for a week-long Turning Earth Intensive if you prefer to put aside a block of time to learn rather than attending a weekly class; please see below.

Week-long 'Turning Earth Intensive' ceramics courses

Due to popular demand, we now hold one-week intensive courses at the Leyton studio.

We've crammed the content of our 12-week course - plus some extras - into a single week. It's a great way to get going in the craft quickly without the long-term commitment of a weekly time slot.

Plan a mini London 'claycation' and get creative in our beautiful East London studio. When you 'graduate' you'll have all the tools you need to become a studio member and come and go at times that suit you.

Please note, to facilitate ample time for firing, a glazing workshop will be held the weekend following the course (8 or 9 days later).
